There are many different ways for Magic the Gathering players enjoy the game. In Standard Format, however, there is pressure to identify and own the relatively few decks that can win in tournaments. Because of the Internet, experienced deck designers can easily upload their proposed constructed Standard decks and these can be immediately play-tested against other strong decks to see which one is stronger and more consistent at winning.

The problem with this is that competitive players select one particular deck only and pay only partial attention to other deck designs or builds. This is compounded by the fact that most tournament-ready decks require 2-4 copies of Rare and/or Uncommon cards for them to work.

This can get very expensive or difficult to gather and buy. Sometimes a player has to trade away or sell other tournament-worthy cards he owns but won't fit in that single deck. This sometimes leaves him without enough strong cards to build a second or third deck. With only one deck to play with and tweak, Magic duels become repetitive even against various other decks.

It's time to make another deck from cards in one's collection, particularly from colors not used in the first deck. This might be the time to use those special lands that provide two or more colors of mana. They allow the insertion of mid-cost cards (4 to 6 mana casting cost) that have only one off-colored mana requirement, like a 4U card in a primarily Red and Black deck.

Making a second or third deck doesn't involve as much pressure as one's primary tournament deck. It's easier and cheaper to assemble because it uses cards you already own but are sitting idle in card boxes. Also, you can play two of your decks against each other, and it's a fun way to spend some free time. By doing this you'll find out how one or both decks can be improved by replacing certain cards.

Are you ready to go? Get out your unused Magic cards and start grouping them by color and theme. The more you do this, the better you'll become at constructing decks. By the way, this is good practice if you want to play in a limited construction or booster draft tournament. Okay, have fun!
