THE BEST EARLY MODERN HORIZONS 3 PREVIEWS (SO FAR)

Time to make the old metagame null and void

Posted on July 10, 2024

Modern Horizons 3 (MH3) has already showcased some exciting cards, promising to shake up the Modern metagame. Below are some highlights from the early previews:

#1 Nethergoyf

Mana Cost: Black

Type: Creature — Lhurgoyf

Effect: Power is equal to the number of card types in your graveyard; toughness is that number plus one. Has Escape for 2 black and exiling other cards from your graveyard with four or more types.

Analysis: It's a cheaper, self-reliant Tarmogoyf with recursion, ideal for low-curve Jund decks. Expect synergy with cards like Dragon's Rage Channeler and Urza's Saga.

#2 Winter Moon

Mana Cost: 2

Type: Artifact

Effect: Limits players to untapping only one nonbasic land during their untap steps.

Analysis: A mix of Winter Orb and Blood Moon, but easily countered with basic lands. Might struggle to impact the meta significantly.

#3 Null Elemental Blast

Mana Cost: Colorless

Type: Instant

Effect: Choose one — Counter target multicolored spell or destroy target multicolored permanent.

Analysis: Strong addition for Tron and Eldrazi decks, offering versatile removal or counter for multicolored threats.

#4 Nulldrifter

Mana Cost: 7

Type: Creature — Eldrazi Elemental

Effect: Draws two cards when cast, has Flying and Annihilator 1, and can be Evoked for 2 blue.

Analysis: Great in draft but slow for Modern. Its evoke ability makes it a useful uncounterable draw spell.

#5 Herigast, Erupting Nullkite

Mana Cost: 9

Type: Legendary Creature — Eldrazi Dragon

Effect: Emerge for 6 red red, draw three cards when cast, flying, and grants emerge to other creature spells.

Analysis: Emerge mechanic provides cost reduction, making it a potential powerhouse for drawing cards and cheating out creatures.

#6 Phelia, Exuberant Shepherd

Mana Cost: 1 white

Type: Legendary Creature — Dog

Effect: Flash, blinks a nonland permanent upon attacking, and gains +1/+1 if it reenters under your control.

Analysis: Versatile with blink effects and growing with each activation, Phelia has strong potential in various strategies.

#7 Meltdown

Mana Cost: X red

Type: Sorcery

Effect: Destroys each artifact with mana value X or less.

Analysis: Effective against artifact-heavy decks, particularly Urza's Saga and Affinity, Meltdown is a powerful tool for artifact control.

#8 Kappa Cannoneer

Mana Cost: 5 blue

Type: Artifact Creature — Turtle Warrior

Effect: Improvise, Ward 4, and puts a +1/+1 counter on itself when an artifact enters the battlefield under your control.

Analysis: Strong synergy with artifact-heavy decks, boosting its power and evading blockers, Kappa Cannoneer is a reprint with strong potential.

#9 Wight of the Reliquary

Mana Cost: Black green

Type: Creature — Zombie Knight

Effect: Vigilance, gets +1/+1 for each creature card in your graveyard, and can tutor a land by sacrificing another creature.

Analysis: Offers value through graveyard synergy and land tutoring, making it a strong contender for grindy matchups.

#10 Ugin's Labyrinth

Type: Land

Effect: Exiles a colorless card with mana value 7 or greater, adds colorless mana, and returns the exiled card to hand.

Analysis: Provides powerful ramp and card retrieval for Eldrazi decks, functioning as a pain-free Ancient Tomb.

#11 Flare of Denial

Mana Cost: 1 blue blue

Type: Instant

Effect: Counter a spell by sacrificing a nontoken blue creature.

Analysis: A free counterspell option that can be highly effective in decks with creatures like Snapcaster Mage.

These previews indicate a promising shake-up in the Modern format, with a mix of powerful reprints and innovative new cards. As we get closer to the full release, expect to see these cards tested and potentially dominating tournaments.
